Interior Design |Transform "Scratch and Dent" Finds Into One-of-a-Kind Treasures!

How many times have you found that perfect piece of furniture, but it turned out to be NOT so perfect?  Don't disregard it just because it's imperfect!  Some of the best bargains are scratch and dent finds that you can transform into one-of-a-kind treasures.

We came across this console and noticed it was missing the bottom shelf and sported a few minor scratches.  The deep notches from where the bottom shelf used to be inserted presented a wee bit of a problem, but the overall structure was sound and sturdy.  Did I mention it was marked down 70%? Cha ching!  Need I say more?!

Scratch and Dent Find

Our first thought on how to hide the notches was to wrap the legs with matching stained rope.  Stained rope would add interesting texture and give this piece somewhat of a nautical feel.  However, since we were designing a space using more traditional pieces, we decided to wrap tin strips around the notches and apply an antique finish to match the drawer pull.

We scored on finding embossed 2 1/2" tin strips at our local craft store. . .marked down 50%!  Black acrylic paint was applied using a brush and then lightly dabbed with a soft cloth to create the antique finish. To conceal the minor finish scratches we used a dark brown permanent marker.  I suggest using a felt tip marking pen for very small blemishes only. . .if you have larger scratch repairs, experiment using a tinted furniture polish or oil.  Total cost to turn this scratch and dent find into a one-of-a-kind treasure, $4.00!
